1. Introduction
Welcome to Aerosol's Privacy Policy. This document outlines our commitment to protecting your privacy and explains our data practices regarding the Aerosol Chrome extension.
2. Summary of Data Practices
Aerosol is a free and open-source Chrome extension developed by Raghav Karn. We collect absolutely no user data. The extension operates with zero browser permissions and is designed with user privacy as our highest priority.
3. Information We Do Not Collect
To be explicitly clear, Aerosol does not collect any of the following information:
- Personally Identifiable Information: We do not collect names, email addresses, usernames, or any other identifiers.
- Health Information: We do not collect or process any health-related data.
- Financial and Payment Information: We do not collect credit card information, bank account details, or any payment information.
- Authentication Information: We do not collect passwords, security questions, or any login credentials.
- Personal Communications: We do not access, collect, or store messages, emails, or any form of personal communications.
- Location Data: We do not track your physical location or movement patterns.
- Web Browsing History: We do not track the websites you visit or your browsing patterns.
- User Activity: We do not monitor how you use our extension or any other applications.
- Website Content: We do not access or analyze the content of websites you visit.
4. No Data Transfer or Sale
Since we do not collect any user data, we have nothing to sell, share, or transfer. Specifically:
- We do not sell or transfer any user data to third parties.
- We do not use or transfer user data for purposes unrelated to Aerosol's single purpose (providing air quality information).
- We do not use or transfer user data to determine creditworthiness or for lending purposes.
- We do not share data with data brokers, information resellers, or for advertising purposes.
5. Extension Permissions
Aerosol operates with zero browser permissions. This means:
- We cannot access your browsing data
- We cannot access your browser tabs or history
- We cannot read or modify content on websites you visit
- We cannot access your storage or download data to your device
Our no-permission approach reflects our commitment to user privacy and data security.
6. Third-Party Services
Aerosol uses the OpenWeatherMap API solely to fetch air quality data. Important notes about this third-party service:
- When you search for a city's air quality, a request is sent directly to OpenWeatherMap
- These API calls use our developer API key, not any user-specific credentials
- The API requests contain only the city name you search for, with no personal identifiers
- All calculations for AQI and equivalent cigarettes are performed locally in your browser using our JavaScript algorithm
- No user data is shared with OpenWeatherMap beyond the city name entered for the search
For information on how OpenWeatherMap handles data, please refer to their Privacy Policy.
7. Data Security
As Aerosol does not collect, store, or process any user data, there are no data security risks associated with using our extension. All air quality calculations are performed locally within your browser session and are not retained after use.
8. Children's Privacy
Aerosol complies with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 years of age. In fact, as our extension collects no personal information whatsoever from any users, it is inherently compliant with regulations concerning children's privacy.
9. International Data Transfer
Aerosol does not transfer any data internationally as we do not collect any data in the first place. As such, we are not subject to cross-border data transfer regulations.
10. Your Rights
Under various privacy regulations such as GDPR, CCPA, and others, users have specific rights regarding their personal data. However, since Aerosol does not collect any personal data, there is no user data to access, correct, delete, or transfer. Nevertheless, if you have any questions about your privacy while using our extension, you are welcome to contact us.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or for operational, legal, or regulatory reasons. We will notify users of any material changes by updating the "Last Updated" date at the top of this policy. We encourage users to review this Privacy Policy periodically to stay informed about our privacy practices.
12. Open Source Commitment
Aerosol is open source software. Our source code is publicly available, which means anyone can inspect it to verify our privacy claims. We believe in transparency and invite users to review our code at our GitHub repository.
